Hello

Hope someone can help, I've had to format an Acer Aspire 3690 and reinstall windows xp. It seems to have gone okay, but there are a few residual problems (as always!).
The wireless internet connection is quite slow and refuses to connect to alot of sites, seems to timeout or something. Not sure why this is, there was a brief error message saying something about the modem being connected through a bus or something but it flashed off before i had a chance to take it down.
Also, in device manager the ethernet controller doesn't seem to have a driver and so has a ! next to it.
Lastly, I'm not sure which Lan driver i should install as there are 3 different ones - 10-100, 5787 or 5789.

Any help hugely appreciated!

Cheers

Minski

Hi Minski,

When you reinstalled, did you reinstall from the recovery CD that came with your computer or with a Win XP install disk? If you used the recovery CD, then all the drivers that you need should be available on there. If not, goto http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_3690.html and you can download the drivers from there. In the case of your LAN driver, I'd suggest to download all versions and see if any will install with your card.

From Control Panel --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager

Right click on the controller and select 'Update Driver'. Follow the on screen prompts until it asks you where you'd like to search - have it check each folder in turn with the downloaded drivers. It will install the one it thinks best.

As for the wireless internet connection, that sounds to be more of an internet connection issue than a problem with your wireless lan. Try the basics first - reset your router (I am assuming you have broadband). Once your LAN driver is installed, try plugging directly into the router using an ethernet cable. If its still slow then its definately a connection problem and not likely to be at your end.

Thanks Chris, I'll try your advice with the LAN thing, as for the internet connection thing, I think the problem must be with the laptop setup/settings as we have a dell laptop with similar spec running perfectly from the router. The acer does connect but download speed on most sites is pretty slow (almost looks like dial up!) and many websites won't connect at all when they work fine on the dell. Any ideas what this could be?

Do you have SP3 installed? What browser are you using?
