I have lost count how many times i have turned up to a customer with a faulty broadband connection, and self diagnosed the problem to be a line fault by goign to the master test socket and unplugging all the equipment ect....... but then having to do all the mickey mouse steps for the isp.

I called tiscali today and explained i had change filters/cables ever a second router and plugged into the master test socket, and just wanted them to run a simple line test to confirm i was right so they could action a bt engineer .

40 minutes later after humoring them the nice lady from india ran out of ideas and decided to run the line test i had requested they do at the beginning of the call... guess what line test showed a broadband fault on the line.

My question (sorry about the rant) is there any way to run the line test yself, or a special number i can dial with permisions of BT /TIscali to save everyone the time and hassle and simply run a line test .....?

Hi there,

The best way to test a BT line is after broadband is installed, you change the username and password:

Username: bt_test_user@your_connnection_pipe
Password: none

Where the your_connection_pipe is the bit after the @ in your own username.

If that still doesn't connect, then your line is faulty and need a BT engineer.

I know this thread is old and the original poster may know the answer now but to those who don't know..If my memory serves correctly you can dial 150 from the BT line in questions for a PSTN linecheck.

There should also be a generic number for an automated service status on the ISP's website.
