Can you help please...
I am no technical person only a user so plain simple English please LOL...
My internet for the last 4 weeks has gone off. It slows to a crawl and then nothing, cant open pages or anything. I have to reboot the computer and then up again. This is obviously a pain when playing online games. I have had things checked by my ISP and they inform me it’s my end. So can anyone help please? I have an Acer Aspire 5630 lap top running windows XP on virgin broadband with 20meg download speed (supposedly)
Thanks to anyone who can help its driving me mad!!!!

Sounds like a trojan/virus on your computer (probably several). If its affecting everything that badly, then the best thing would be to back everything up and do a complete wipe and reinstallation of your computer.

Even I faced the same prob and found nothing and kept trying it thinking it to be a server problem. But when got it checked I found that there is a virus in the wiring.

Download the new AVG 9.0 Free edition. I have never had a problem with AVG and viruses I have encountered have been removed.
Highly recommended.

Few things really:
How is your connection to the router/modem? If you are running wireless do you sit far from the router, or on the other side of concrete wall? It may also be possible you have a faulty wireless card or router.
Could somebody else piggybacking on your wireless and destroying your connection with torrents? If that's the case your ISP might be throttling your connection which they may not tell you on the phone. As for security personally WEP connections I don't consider secure, these were crackable several years back within 20-30 mins with average skill levels, these days, would prob take somebody who knew what they were doing 5 mins. You will want a WPA encryption on your wireless.
Then of course there are the chances of viruses. In case of this, personally I would just reinstall windows (or whatever) from scratch after reformating the HDD. Viruses may also do bad things to your connection and cause your ISP to throttle your net.
The first thing I would try though is using a wired connection if you're on wireless. If that works then its your wireless thats an issue.
Try your laptop on a different network and see if you get the same issues (prob best to try wired and wireless).
Also keep in mind, you may have more than one issue. Unfortunately a bad net connection means you have at least one thing wrong, but it often turns out to be several.
Good luck sorting your net.
