many thanks, RYAN (on31ll)
If you're looking at a server as a solution in need of a problem, then you don't need one.
Servers can do a multitude of tasks (but not limited to):
Media Centre: Can be used to store tv/movies for use on a tv. Such a server could also act as the signal receiver.
Web Server: Host your own websites
Data Server: Centrally stored data for multiple computers in house.
Of course, your home server could be all 3 of the above - or something completely different. What were you planning on doing?

i just wanted to know what could be done ? and i dont really understand the way of controlling the server ?!? can it but put in a cuboard ??and when using it is it like a normal o/s that ya can run tasks on or is it complicated ??/ sorry for the questions but after research and the 3 you named i think i like the idea just tryin to understand.
Again, the operating system will depend on what the function would be.
For all servers, if you have the technical know-how then its best to use Linux. Its resource light and can do pretty much whatever you want.
For a Media Centre PC, its best to have to next to the TV with your other boxes - like VCR/DVD player. You can get TV tuning cards that come with a remote control and are compatible with Linux and Windows. In my opinon Windows offers the best out-of-the-box solution with the 'Windows Media Centre' application. This can also be plugged into your XBOX 360 to allow access to the XBOX Live movie downloading site etc. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Center for more info. It can also serve multiple tv's / computer monitors around the house - provided it is powerful enough.
A web/dataserver is best off with Linux provided you're not looking to do any ASP programming (or other proprietry MS language).
All these need are connections to the relative outputs - like ethernet/wifi and tv out. As such they can be hidden in the cupboard if needed.

I have an old Bang & Olufsen hifi - its 20 years old so it lacks USB and and iPod socket, but the system is still very very good. So, I've just rigged up an old computer with XP to it and installed iTunes. I've then placed touch screens around the house so that I can control the music from most rooms. A cheap, but effective home entertainment (albeit audio only) system.
