DSUB No Signal

Hi,

I have just taken the motherboard out of one of my computers to replace a faulty heatsink fan. To gain easy access, I took the motherboard out of the chassis and disconnected the relevant cables and took out the graphics card.

Once re-assembled, I powered up the computer. The initial DOS screen came up fine during booting up but as the blue welcome screen was about to appear the monitor switched to standby mode with the screen message 'DSUB - No Signal'.
I know the computer logged in O.K. because I could hear the noise of the various pop-up boxes which appear after logging in.

I have re-checked everything including taking out the graphics card and reseating it but I still have the same problem. This problem also occured when I connected it to another monitor. Has the graphics card packed up or is there a simpler answer?. I would be grateful if somebody could give me some advice.

It sounds like for some reason Windows is attempting to output to the graphics card resolution/colour settings that the graphics card cannot handle.

Usually, the simplest way around the problem is to boot up into safe mode (press f8 repeatedly). Once into windows, goto the resolution settings adn set to 640x480 (or the lowest resolution).

Restart and set a safe resolution in windows. (Usually if its displayed as an option then its safe).

However, if your monitor is blank even in safe mode, then its a slightly worse problem. But this shouldn't happen as you can clearly see the POST details when you first start up.

Thanks for your help. I had to do a system restore in safe mode after initially altering the settings as you described in safe mode and then restarting windows normally did not work. All seems to be fine now so once again, thanks for your help.
