I have a Hp D5100 SFF with 2gb ram and a 500gb 1st hard drive master and a 400gb hard drive slave running XP pro.
My problem is that the pc works perfectly whatever I am doing apart from when I open IE7. It just shuts down after around 10 seconds. I have tried the following to try and rectify without success.
Reset IE.
System restore to earlier time, failed due to shutting down in middle of restore.
Unistalled IE7 and went back to IE6 (I Dont like IE8)
Ran anti-virus scan using my PC Guard.
Ran adaware Pro scan.
Ran Registry Mechanic.
Ran Spy Bot.
Ran malwarebyte, had to do this scan in safe mode as would shut down in normal mode.

Any ideas?

I had this problem with IE8 initially too - I downgraded to IE7 and the problem was fixed.

I seem to have resolved this shutting down problem now, I went into Bios and changed the setting on the fan so it ran faster, no shutting down problems for the last couple of weeks now

My apologies - I thought you meant that IE7 exited, not that your actual computer shutdown.

If increasing fan speed fixed the problem, then your computer is almost certainly overheating. The most likely culprit is that over time there has been a dust build up on your processor's heatsink - thereby reducing its effectiveness. Increasing fan speed will only be a temporary fix as eventually the dust build up will be too great for the fan to cope with.

The best solution (if you're feeling brave) is to take your computer apart and use cotton buds to clean the heatsink. In fact, you might be able to simply poke the cotton bud thorugh the fan exhaust without dismantling the computer. Alternatively, if you're not that confident, take your computer in to be cleaned at a repair shop.

You should also run a full anti-virus scan too. IE7 has many bugs.
