Hi there
I have been playing with Server 2003 at home to try and get some experience with the system for possible future jobs. I did a standard windows back up on my file server and the back up just aborted after 40% without giving me an error!
What could possibly be the problem? Do you know why this happened? How can I prevent this in the future? I am sure there must be lots of tricks with this system so I am looking forward to any input! :-)
By the way, I have a 500gig drive and 40% of free space if this is by any chance important

Hi foxxy:
Were you backing up your entire system or just individual folders/files? Was this over an ethernet or wifi connection?

I think it was a full backup and over ethernet. What gremlins could I look for?

I can't really think of any gremlins - especially given it was a wired rather than wireless network and it didn't give you any error message.
I'd suggest checking that what you're trying to backup doesn't exceed your fileservers space - though with 500GB that would be unlikely. How up to date is the Win2003?

I have all the MS updates so it is current. I read up on possible conflicts too and I can't seem to find anything with that. Everything seems fine in that way. Is it possible to be a file structure thing? Is it possible to be corrupt even though I don't get error messages? I notice that this machine is also slow. I don't know what to think with this one. All my other computers are generally ok except for the issues I keep asking questions about. I even checked the RAM of this machine and that seems ok too. *shrug*

Have you tried doing the backup again or doing a backup of a different computer?

What I did here: I did a defrag, and did it again and again until I was convinced it was ok. Backing up works now and is fairly quick. Its amazing. You advice with the other stuff seems to be much more far reaching than just a slow home computer! I think next time I do this though I am going to try a 3rd party thing that is quick and automatic. I can't remember if I asked what I could use for this?
