i have looked on net for a fix but most are saying to boot from xp disk, but i did not get an xp disk only the recovery disks, so how can i fix this problem, any idea's gratefully recieved

Hi - welcome to the forum!

This is a common problem that is found when the system recovery doesn't go according to plan!

Are you using a recovery CD or an actual WinXP disc?

If you're using the XP disc, then boot using that:
1. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
2. When prompted type "1" or if you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
3. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
4. Now you should be at the command prompt.
5. Type:

cd\
attrib -c ntldr

Then restart your computer and everything should be ok.

If you're using a recovery CD, check to see if it will allow you to access either the command prompt or the recovery console.

If not:

Does the 7039 have a floppy drive?

From another computer, go to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q310994 and download the recovery floppies and copy to floppy disks.

Boot up using them to the 'Recovery Console' and then run FIXBOOT.

If you don't have a floppy drive and are still having problems, I'll see about the best way of how for you to create a recovery disk using a USB Flash Drive.

The ntfs.com link allows you to download the CD image for a DOS boot disk. In theory, download and startup using that and then follow as above. Let me know how you do!
