Wireless Network Range

I have a belkin wireless transmitter which is usb. When I try to use my laptop and desktop linked wirelessly, the signal drops massively at only a couple of metres. How can I boost the range?

Which standard are the 2 devices use?

The problem with wireless is that the signal deteriorates rapidly when walls are in the way. With G standard networks and the new N standard, this is becoming much less of a problem.
