How do firewalls work?

When playing games on my network, I can only get the games to work with the firewall switched off.

what do i do to get the games to work?

You need to determine what port the game runs on, and then let it through the firewall. What firewall do you use? Does it not come up with a warning dialog that the game wants to access the network?

I use Keirio Personal Firewall. No it doesn't come up with a warning. It does sometimes for other things, just not for this.
