My apologies - I thought you meant that IE7 exited, not that your actual computer shutdown.
If increasing fan speed fixed the problem, then your computer is almost certainly overheating. The most likely culprit is that over time there has been a dust build up on your processor's heatsink - thereby reducing its effectiveness. Increasing fan speed will only be a temporary fix as eventually the dust build up will be too great for the fan to cope with.
The best solution (if you're feeling brave) is to take your computer apart and use cotton buds to clean the heatsink. In fact, you might be able to simply poke the cotton bud thorugh the fan exhaust without dismantling the computer. Alternatively, if you're not that confident, take your computer in to be cleaned at a repair shop.
