Guys, I'm really hoping someone can help here, as I'm really not very computer savvy, and am reaching the end of my tether.

Have been using broadband through my laptop for about the last 4 months with no problems at all - fast downloads and web browsing etc. Then suddenly last Thursday (30th), my internet has severely slowed down. We are talking even the main bbc page takes about 30 seconds to load with huge hang time on images. It seems to be operating at slower than 14.4 dial up speed!

Before I continue, I work/live in Hungary, so havent had a chance to call up the ISP yet, but will do (with a translator nearby!), if I can't get it sorted myself.

It's a nightmare to even browse with. I wasn't sure if it was a browser issue or not, but I have the same ultra slow speed on all browsers, and even on downloads (1-2.5k/sec!), and even on Itunes - impossible to download any podcasts at all now - all with the same slow speed.

I am running Windows XP home, and have just uninstalled SP3 - no avail. I have removed AVG antivirus and my firewall as well - no luck. I have tried CCleaner, adaware, spybot, spware doctor 6, and Hijackthis - still just as slow. The rest of the PC works fine - only the internet sucks.

I am not sure if there is any more malware on it, but can't check as any kind of virus definitions update show an estimated download time of 11 hours! I have tried changing LAN cable, powering down and resetting the cable modem - even reinstalling the modem drivers, and even system restore on the XP to before last week.

I still see 100.0 Mbps connected on the bottom right corner - would this mean that all is fine in terms of the ISP sending what it needs to send, and the fault is on my PC?

The modem is a Scientific Altanla and is plugged straight in to the PC.

Hi Lostboy - lets see if we can find the problem.

Looking at the data, it is a problem the connection line itself - not your computer. I'd STRONGLY suggest you reinstall SP3, AVG, Firewall etc. as these wont be whats affecting your connection speed.

The 100MBPS connection speed is the connection between your computer and your router, (alas) not the connection to your service provider.

I've personally found that the bbc is a bad website to test your connection with as its sometimes very slow. Goto www.speedtest.net and do a test against a server near to where you live.

The ping times that you've posted show that its either the website you're trying to connect to, or its your ISP line. Do you download a lot? I don't know about your provider in Hungary, but in the UK if you go over your usage limit then they chop your connection so that its only fast enough to get e-mail. Try doing the speed test above 3 times during the day: when you wake up, about half way through and just before going to bed.

If they're still bad, the only thing thats going to sort this out is to actually contact your ISP i'm afraid!
