Default Problem with CD/DVD ROM drives

Hi, I recently realised that my CD/DVD ROM drives were not working. The device status of them both is 'device cannot start' (code 10). I tried to update driver software, I have tried to roll back driver, I have tried uninstalling the drivers and downloading them again but the installation failed. I uninstalled them again and rebooted the computer,it detected new hardware and attempted to re-install the drivers but the installation failed again. Does anyone have any idea what I should try next?

The names of the devices are

Pioneer DVD RW DVR-109 and

IDE DVD-ROM 16X

I am running vista home basic

Hi there -

This Microsoft knowledge base article should help

"Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

It details fixes to be made in the Windows Registry.
