Default Configuring modem/router - please help!

I prostrate myself in front of all you wonderful and knowledge people in respect of the possibility of helping me.

Situation: Right, I've got ADSL broadband in the UK with Virgin. I've been happily using the Speedtouch modem they sent me years ago.

However, in a bit to go wireless (for the wife's laptop), I bought a supercheap ADSL modem/router (Micradigital 802.11g ADSL modem with wireless router).

Now, I've connected it correctly (phone line into ADSL socket, supplied Ethernet cable into computer, etc), and have followed all the setup, using the info Virgin gave me.

However, having done all this, it's still not connecting to the internet!

All the lights on the front of the router are on with the exception of the "PPP" one, and when you open Network Connections, under "Internet Gateway", it says "WAN connection on ......." and the status is "connecting".

What do I have to do to set this bloody thing up correctly? Please bear in mind I am not a techie (see my name!), so simple instructions would help!

For info, when I set up the router, the first page was:
ESSID: WLAN
ESSID Broadcast: Enabled
Wireless Mode: Mixed 11b and 11g
Channel: 11

The second page was:
Protocol: PPPoA
VPI/CVI: 0/38
Encapsulation: VC MUX
User Name: Home 500
Password: CHAP

And that's it. Somehow I managed to stumble on the WAN settings and change the VC1's MTU from 1500 to 1458. I have no idea what that means, but 1458 was one of the things Virgin said.

There, the story ends.

If anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it. Many thanks in advance.
