Question Keyboard problems with newly installed Hard drive DELL D400

Hello Everyone, this is my first post and i hope someone can help.

My brother in law gave me a Dell Latitude D400 (which i am giving to my daughter for Xmas) yes, times are tough.

The laptop was in perfect condition apart from a useless hard drive which i had to replace.

I installed the new hard drive, which already had XP on it (out of a sony Vaio)

Everything works great, yes my Dell thinks its a Vaio, but its all great apart from the keyboard.

most keys are working but the cursers, the enter key, delete key and a few others are not.

I am thinking that this has something to do with the drivers (of which there are still a few vaio ones on the system) I have tried to find a keyboard driver at Dell, but i have downloaded everything and i still have the keyboard problem.

My brother in law swears the keyboard is not broken, so if anyone out there can suggest something, that would be great.

I can just about give my daughter a second hand laptop for xmas, but not one with a dodgy keyboard!!!!!!!

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Generally, keyboard drivers are generic with only special keys being added. For example, all keyboards have an enter key, but some may or may not have volume controls.

To test whether it is the driver or not, try going to:

Control Panel --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager

Scroll down to keyboards, and delete whatever entries there are. Under the menu bar at the top, there should be a button icon with a picture of a magnifying glass, and say something like 'Search for new hardware' or add new etc.

Click on that and the computer will reinstall drivers for the keyboard. If the keyboard is still broken, then it is a dodgy keyboard i'm afraid!

(Although, if you want to confirm its not the driver, restart and go into the BIOS setup. From there, test the troublesome keys - ie the cursors should move the menu and the enter can be tested by selecting one of the options. Obviously, don't save the new profile though!!)

If the above suggestion still not work, you may try backup data and reinstall the XP on your Dell laptop.

For XP and other NT based OS, using the other HDD from other PC with OS most of time will not work and needed to reinstall the xp.

Now seems the problem is caused by the swapping HDD with Xp on.
    Reinstall the OS should work.

    Hope this helps!
