I've just taken out a new server (EQ4) at Hetzner in Germany. The core i7 processors are very powerful so I want to install VMware server or ESXi and then use cPanel on a guest.
After installation, I tried to install a guest OS and assign an IP address to no avail. I've tried 'bridged', 'nat' and 'host only'. Using host only, I can access the internet from the guest, but not the guest from the internet.
Can anyone help? Hetzner don't seem too helpful.
Welcome back WWP
Hetzner do very good deals on their servers. If you wanted to install cPanel on the host machine then there would be no problem.
However, Hezner use an odd IP address allocation method by allocating them solely to the MAC address of the host ethernet adapter. As such, virtual MAC addresses created by VMware or Xen or other hypervisors cannot have external IPs assigned to them.
You can set your guest OSs to 'Host Only' or 'Nat' networking and then have your host OS forward packets on. But cPanel is definately not compatible with this solution (tried and tested!)
