I seem to be having major problems with .net framwork updates. Windows update has been attempting to install the 3.5 update for weeks now, and each time I try to complete it manually it gives the message that the update was unable to install. No reasons, no list of errors, just unable to install.
After some hunting around I came across .net framework cleanup tool, which I duly downloaded and ran. As soon as I restarted I got the message that cli.exe failed to initialize properlyx0000135.
Then it seemed that firefox had decided to stop working, IE was not responding, update wouldnt work, I couldn't install .net framework 3.5. I tried logging in safe mode, but that presented me with the sudden appearance of an administrator account I've never seen before (I'm the only person who uses this PC) and I do not know what the password could be, which meant I had to log under my normal user, which would not give me administrator rights, so even tho firefox and IE were now working (better than normal too) I couldn't really do anything.
If anyone can give me a few pointers about whether I actually need .net framework 1.1, 3.5 and all the rest, how to install them, what might be preventing windows update from completing, I would be most grateful.
I'm running Windows XP Professional 32bit Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435 (Service Pack 3)
Thanks in advance!
Hi Gav1
Sounds like a mess!
All windows XP machines have an administrator account that is hidden under normal operation. The password is usually set during installation. The best way that I can think of to get hold it is to google for the default admin password for your particular manufacturer/machine.
Q1) Do you have Visual Studio installed?
Q2) Is your Win Update completely not working or is it just not installing .NET?
---- If it is not workign completely, then its time to system restore to point that it did or to do a complete format and reinstallation.
Q3) Can you please post the installation logs? They can be found by going to Start --> Run --> and typing each of the following:
Code:%temp%\dd_dotnetfx35install.txt %temp%\dd_dotnetfx35error.txt %temp%\dd_depcheck_netfx*.txt

Need to know your IP? Need to find WHOIS data for a website or IP address? Want to know your Google PageRank? Then you need Domain Tools!
It is really a messy! You should contact a computer engineer and the problem fix.
