Video effects

how can i do visual effects for my home movies? eg lightsabers or gun fire effects

I don't think that there are any cheap ones on the market, but i've had some success with the demo version of 'fxhome'. Thats got some pretty cool effects as standard.

I downloaded and gave it a go, it seems very complicated. Do you know of anything similar?

I think fxhome is the easiest to use if you want any meaningful effects. If all you need is something to change between scenes or shots, then you can just use the built in features of windows movie maker.
